As someone with a health + fitness background, I thought I was doing pretty good with keeping my body healthy. I mean, I workout everyday. I eat fairly healthfully (although, y’all know I like myself some chocolate + beer… not together… well, sometimes…). That’s HEALTHY, right?!
Well, after reading the book Woman Code by Alisa Vitti, I realized that while I was doing well in the fitness + nutrition aspect of my health, I wasn’t doing quite as well when it came to my hormones.
Yup, those little things that cause us to break out, act like a crazy woman, and make us downright moody. My husband absolutely loves this about me (sarcasm)... but I never knew that I could actually do something about my hormones. I thought my hormones just did their own thing, and I was just on the outside dealing with it.
Turns out, there are some easy swaps you can make that will help you manage your hormones better. Now, this is NOT the end all be all of taking care of your hormones, but to me, it’s about the EASIEST place we can start…
Switching to Natural Beauty Products
Did you know toxic beauty products are hormone disruptors, which cause certain hormones and organ systems to overcompensate, throwing off our natural hormonal balance and leading to symptoms such as infertility, PMS, terrible menstrual cramping, acne, and insomnia, among others?!
I’ve gotta admit, this has not been the easiest transition for me because I am PICKY about my products. I WANT to have ALL my products natural, but the reality is, I also want them to WORK. So, as you’ll see, I have some products that I LOVE and that were easy to switch to, and others that I’m still working on.
(And, because I want to make sure I am transparent about this, I do make money off of some of these products as an affiliate. HOWEVER, I would NEVER recommend anything that I didn’t personally stand behind and use myself.)
IN THE SHOWER
>> Shampoo + Conditioner: If you’ve been following me on IG (and if you’re not, you SHOULD), you know that I LOVE my MONAT products! I fell in love with the shampoo and conditioner for my DAUGHTER before I started using them (and selling them) myself. Not only do they WORK (seriously, my hair has NEVER looked better or been more healthy), but did you know that they’re non-toxic (no phthalates, SLS/SLES, or parabens), cruelty free, vegan, AND naturally based?!
I actually compared some samples of shampoo I received at the local drugstore a few months back, and it terrifies me that I was putting that on my kids (and myself) for so long.
Plus, you can customize a “system” so you can get exactly the right products in your hands that will help you with YOUR hair type! I have fine, flat hair, so I LOVE the Volume shampoo + conditioner! But, if you have damaged, colored, curly, frizzy, kinky, dry, etc. hair… there’s something for YOU too!
Don’t know what you’d need? Take my FREE Beauty Quiz to find out! Plus, I’ll send you a FREE Hair Spa to try it out for yourself!
>> Soap // Body Wash: Not gonna lie… I haven’t found something that I like for this yet. And just read something (on Facebook) about the soap we do use and how people use it because the smell repels rats! So, if you’ve got any recommendations, I’d be more than happy to hear them!
POST-SHOWER
>> Lotion: I actually have THREE that I really, really love that are my go-to natural lotions. One is Beautycounter’s Hydrating Body Lotion. I ADORE the smell of this lotion! It’s smells so so good! But, I go through A LOT of lotion, so this bottle doesn’t last me long. But, it’s ALWAYS in my suitcase for when I travel!
My typical go-to lotion is Hempz Herbal Body Moisturizer. Yes, there’s a pot leaf on the bottle, but that’s because it’s infused with hemp seed oil, which is shown to help with inflammation in the body. Not only is it natural + works, but it SMELLS amazing too!
Unfortunately, they don’t sell Hempz at Target (boo), so I had to pick up something different the last time I went. I stumbled upon Raw Sugar Fresh + Light Cold Pressed Ultra Hydrating Lotion. This stuff is THICK, so a little goes a LONG way. But, keeps my skin feeling soft + moisturized all day, and again, smells amazing!
>> Deodorant: OK, I’m open to suggestions on this one too. Currently, I’m using Native deodorant, which I truly do like. I feel like it works for the most part. I mean, I don’t think I smell, but I still feel like it doesn’t keep my armpits dry like I want it to. But, I like it enough that I’ve been using it for a year! If you have something else you’d recommend, I’m all ears!
MAKEUP
I’m not going to go into details about every single thing I wear on my face, because, honestly, most of my makeup is Beautycounter. I love the mission they stand for, and their makeup is really, really good! Here are the items I currently use from Beautycounter:
>> Tint Skin Hydrating Foundation (I mix 2 drops of Rejuveniqe oil in with it to make it into a tinted moisturizer)
>> Pout Perfector Lip Care Set
>> Velvet Eyeshadow Palette (they don’t have the one I currently have anymore, but I’d get the Classic or Romantic when I run out)
(Side note: I am NOT an affiliate for Beautycounter. But, if you need a consultant, my BFF Kelli Tobin is one, so if you decide to buy, look her up!)
The only 2 pieces of makeup that I am currently using that are NOT natural (and NOT from Beautycounter) are my mascara and lipstick. I haven’t found anything that I like better than those 2 things yet, so there’s that… but I figure, I’m doing pretty good so far, and I ALWAYS take off my makeup at night.
Which brings us too…
NIGHTLY SKINCARE ROUTINE
This has been one of my BIGGEST struggles, especially when it comes to my hormones. I deal with hormonal acne, meaning, when it’s that time of the month, my face goes haywire. I used to be on prescription topical acne medicine back in high school, but after I got married, I stopped using it.
I feel like I’ve used EVERY skincare product under the sun. From high end beauty brands (like Clinique) to over the counter drug store brands (like Neutrogena) to Rodan + Fields. And R+F was the ONLY product that kept my skin acne free. And I LOVED it! But…
The switch to natural from my tried-and-true has been rough. I decided back in the summer of 2018 that I wanted to try natural skincare products and make the switch. I felt like I tried EVERYTHING. Dermstore was my favorite website to browse because I knew they’d have SOMETHING that worked and was natural, right?!
It just left me frustrated, so I switched back to my tried-and-true Rodan + Fields.
And then, MONAT came out with a skincare line. And as an affiliate for them, I felt obligated to try it. But, I was sure it was going to end up like the rest of them and I’d have to switch back.
For 2 months, I used strictly MONAT’s Be Balanced routine: face wash, essence, Rewind serum, and moisturizer. And…
IT WORKED.
Now, I still get the occasional acne flare up around that time of the month, but it is NOTHING like it used to be before R+F or with other natural products. And again, yes, I know that I’m an affiliate for them, but like I said, I wouldn’t recommend anything that I wasn’t actually using on a regular basis.
------
Now, I’m sure I’m missing something that I use on a regular basis that you might be interested in too, but for the most part, this is my typical routine + typical go-to products. I still have a ways to go with EVERYTHING being natural + non-toxic, but I think I’ve made some great progress over the last year to having the majority of my products being GOOD for me!
What about you? I’d love to know what are your go-to natural beauty products you swear by! Or if you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear them!
