How to Balance Business and Family as a Mom Entrepreneur (Without the Guilt Spiral)
When I first started my business, I was working as a virtual assistant.
I'd take on a few clients at a time... helping them with some backend tech stuff, writing and scheduling their blog posts, that kind of thing.
Sounds manageable, right?
Except I also had my son home with me two days a week.
And if you've ever tried to work from home with a little one around, you already know how this goes. You get up every 5 seconds. A snack. A show. A "mom, watch this." Repeat for eight hours.
So there I was... trying to work AND take care of my son at the same time.
And I felt scattered. And annoyed. And honestly? Kind of like a failure at both.
I felt like I NEVER had enough time to get my work done AND still be present with my son.
Here's the part I didn't want to admit...
When I was "playing" with my son, I was actually checking my email.
And when I was "working," I was never putting the most important thing first... I was just grabbing whatever felt easiest.
So I was doing both things at once. And doing both of them badly.
Why does balancing business and family feel impossible?
Here's the reality... you don't have a balance problem.
You have a priorities problem. And a protecting-your-time problem.
Because "balance" makes it sound like the goal is a perfectly even 50/50 split... business on one side, family on the other, sitting there in beautiful harmony.
That's not real life. Especially not with kids.
Some days your business gets more of you. Some days your family does. That's not failing... that's just being a human with a full life.
The thing that actually makes you feel like you're drowning isn't the lack of balance.
It's that you haven't decided what actually matters most... so everything feels equally urgent, you try to do all of it at once, and you end the day feeling behind on your business AND your kids.
You don't need more balance.
You need to know your priorities... and then protect the time to actually do them.
That's the whole idea behind the method I teach my clients (and use myself every single week). It's called the SYS Method, and it's three simple steps:
✔️ PLAN your real priorities... not just your to-do list
✔️ PRIORITIZE the few things that actually matter each day
✔️ PROTECT that time so it doesn't get hijacked
Let me walk you through exactly how it works when you're trying to grow a business AND raise little humans.
ONE || What should I actually be focusing on? (Plan your real priorities)
Here's where most of us go wrong...
We think our "priorities" are just the tasks on our to-do list.
They're not.
Your priorities are also the things you find valuable in your everyday life. The stuff that makes your day one you actually enjoy waking up to.
So before you plan a single work task, I want you to do this little exercise.
Think about 3 things you'd love to have time for today. Not just the to-do list stuff. If you could have the perfect, ideal day... what would you actually get to do?
Here's what mine usually looks like:
Time to be truly PRESENT with my family (not me half-listening while I answer an email)
Time to move my body... because it's good for my physical health AND my mental health (and honestly it's the only alone time I get some days)
Time to get 2-3 important things crossed off my list... not everything, just the stuff that actually matters
Now notice something about that list.
None of it is about other people's expectations of me.
It's what I decided matters. And here's the good news... all of it still helps the people around me.
My family gets a mom who's actually present (and mentally stable, lol). My clients get their needs met because I did the important work. My business grows because I know what to focus on.
That's PLANNING. You decide what matters BEFORE the week runs you over.
(This is exactly why I build my planning around priorities, not just a task list. Your real life has to make the list too.)
TWO || How do I decide what comes first when it ALL feels important? (Prioritize your daily 3)
Ok. So you've got your priorities... business stuff AND life stuff.
But let's be real. That can still feel like a lot when you sit down and everything is screaming "do me first."
So here's what to do instead of trying to do all of it: pick a few things to focus on each day.
How do you choose?
First, look at what's actually due soon. If something HAS to happen today or tomorrow, it wins. Easy.
If nothing's truly urgent, ask yourself... what actually moves my business forward? Did I do something to SELL today? Send the email? Follow up with the lead? Post the thing?
That's where your work time goes first. Not the busywork. Not redesigning your logo for the 6th time.
But here's the piece people skip... your daily few aren't ALL work.
Being present at dinner counts. The 20-minute walk counts. They made your priority list for a reason, so they get protected time too.
Choosing 2-3 things (instead of grinding through a list of 37) means you actually finish the day feeling accomplished.
And that's one less thing to lie awake feeling guilty about tonight.
Three feels doable. Thirty-seven feels like a reason to go scroll Instagram.
Want the AI to just tell you your top 3 priorities for the week?
If picking your daily (or weekly) few still feels fuzzy... I built a FREE little tool for exactly this.
The Weekly Top 3 Tool asks you 4 quick questions about your goal, your offer, and your to-do list... then hands you the 3 tasks that actually deserve your focus first. It's built on the 80/20 rule, so you're always pointed at what GROWS your business (not the busywork you hide in).

THREE || How do I stop letting everything hijack my day? (Protect your time)
This is the one I had to learn the hard way. Remember me "playing" with my son while secretly checking email?
Yeah. That's a protecting problem.
Because here's what's actually happening when you try to do two things at once... you're not doing both. You're doing both of them halfway, feeling guilty the whole time, and getting the worst of both worlds.
So PROTECT means you give each thing its own time. And then you actually guard it.
When I'm working, I'm working. No "quick check" of the group chat. No folding laundry. Just the thing in front of me.
And when I'm with my kids, I'm WITH my kids. Phone down. Email closed. It'll still be there in an hour, I promise.
Doing five things at once isn't impressive... it's just how you end up exhausted and behind on everything.
For me, protecting my time looks like giving my days a theme so I'm not deciding from scratch every morning:
MONDAY: admin + CEO day (data, prepping for the week)
TUESDAY: client calls + marketing
WEDNESDAY: bigger projects
THURSDAY: client calls + content
FRIDAY: planning + reset (and NO calls... that one's non-negotiable for me)
When work has a home, it stops bleeding into family time. And when family has a home, it stops making you feel guilty about work.
That's protecting. It's the difference between staying busy... and actually being present.
So can you really run a business AND be a present mom?
Here's the deal... yes. You can.
But not by chasing some perfect balance where everything gets equal time and nobody ever feels stretched.
You do it by being intentional. Three steps:
PLAN your real priorities... business AND life
PRIORITIZE the few things that actually matter each day
PROTECT that time so it doesn't get hijacked by everything else
You don't have to choose between your business and your family.
You just have to stop trying to do both at the exact same time... and start giving each one your actual attention.
And listen... this works whether you've got a full workday or you're building your business in 15-minute cracks between snack requests and a toddler climbing on you. (I built mine during 90-minute plan periods when I was still teaching full time. So I KNOW it works in the small pockets.)
At the end of the day, we can only do so much. Knowing your priorities and protecting your time is how you stop feeling behind... and start feeling like you're actually doing this whole thing on purpose.
Ready to stop feeling pulled in a hundred directions?
I built the SYS Planner around this EXACT method... space to plan your real priorities, pick your daily few, and protect your time so your business AND your family get the best of you (not the leftovers).
It's simple but structured... designed to work WITH your real, full life. Not add one more thing to it.
FAQs
How do I balance my business and my family as a mom? Stop aiming for a perfect 50/50 split... it doesn't exist. Instead, decide your real priorities (business AND life), pick a few things to focus on each day, and protect that time so you're not trying to do everything at once. Some days business gets more of you, some days family does. That's not failing, that's normal.
How do I stop feeling guilty when I'm working (or when I'm with my kids)? The guilt usually comes from doing two things at once... working while "with" your kids, or being with your kids while stressing about work. When you give each one its own protected time and actually stay present for it, the guilt drops way down, because you know you're not shortchanging either one.
How do I decide what to prioritize each day? Look at what's genuinely due soon first. If nothing's urgent, ask which task actually moves your business forward (like selling or following up). Then make sure your personal priorities... being present at dinner, moving your body... get protected time too. Aim for a doable few, not a list of 37.
Can you really have a successful business and be a present mom? Yes. But not by multitasking your way through both at the same time. You do it by being intentional: plan your priorities, protect the time for each, and give whatever you're doing your full attention. You don't have to choose between them... you just have to stop doing them simultaneously.
